5 TIPS FOR BREASTFEEDING WITH SMALLER BOOBIES

There’s a lot I could say about smaller boobies because that’s what I have had all my life. I really do not know what it feels like to have an ample bosom. I have no idea  but  I love mine just fine. They do pretty much everything that bigger ones do.??

No time does a smaller bust get more attention than when you have just had a baby. Curious friends and family steal glances at your bust silently wondering whether you will actually be able to breastfeed a human ? Who am I kidding? They don’t stare silently….they voice their concerns…loud and clear for all to hear. A first time mum may wonder too whether she will have enough milk to satisfy her baby as a sole source of nourishment.

Worry not, nature does what nature does… Baby will have enough. Anything you do to increase milk production is just for that purpose and would apply even to larger breasts and not because of your ‘polite’ boobies? If you know me… you will know that smaller boobies can still result in very chubby babies.??

Smaller is gooooood?

Here are a few things I have learnt from my experience:

1. Breastfeeding Frequency

Your smaller boobies will hold less breast milk at any given time compared to larger ones. This doesn’t mean you won’t have enough milk for your baby. It just means you will need to breastfeed more frequently through the day. This is made easier by feeding baby on demand rather than on schedule.

2. Balancing Breastfeeding

I failed miserably at this with my first baby. In the beginning, I would switch breasts when breastfeeding.  Somewhere along the way, I didn’t pay as much attention and baby fed more from my right breast. This resulted in the right breast creating more milk to keep up with demand… it grew evidently larger than the left one and they were not a pretty sight ?? It eventually shrunk back to size as I breast fed less and eventually stopped. However, it took a loooong while before they were both the same size again. I didn’t make the same mistake with baby no. 2. Balancing is important even with larger boobies. However, when it isn’t done, the unevenness will show more for smaller ones.

3. Positioning

Your baby will need help to latch on properly to your smaller boobies. Try the V-hold… place your nipple and areola between your index finger and your middle finger to keep them upright making it easier for baby to latch on.

4. Tracking Baby’s Growth

Breast size aside, keenly tracking your baby’s growth is critical. Seek your doctor’s advice if baby isn’t gaining weight as expected.

5. Speak…

Women often struggle in silence because breastfeeding is assumed to be a natural experience that just happens and flows with no hitches. When one doesn’t have it going as  expected they might be too shy to ask or talk about it.  Sometimes just knowing that you aren’t the only one facing challenges makes it all better.
